Makeup Artist Schools in Mississippi
Ever notice you've heard the term "cosmetology school" a million times, but never really heard the term "makeup school" said as often? There's a reason for that: there are far, far fewer schools that teach makeup artistry than there are cosmetology schools. They do exist, but unfortunately, there are no makeup artist schools in Mississippi that are dedicated solely to the art of makeup.
So, where can you go to learn more about makeup and become a high-performing and well-paid makeup artist?
Makeup Is Taught In The Following Locations...
Cosmetology Schools. This is, perhaps, the best way of getting a beauty education. You'll learn all aspects of the beauty industry, including how to:
- Analyze different hair textures;
- Style and sculpt hair to customers' request;
- Color hair using different chemical processes;
- Straighten, wave, and curly hair;
- Beautify skin using cleansing techniques;
- Perform manicures using various tools;
- Sanitize your equipment and keep a clean workspace; and
- Understand the "business side" of beauty and help run a salon.
The most important aspect of a beauty school education is that when you graduate, you'll be able to take the Mississippi cosmetology licensing test and get a license. That'll allow you to work in any spa or salon in the state.
Short-Term Workshops. These are a FANTASTIC option, because 1) you'll learn about makeup, and 2) get to travel a little bit. Very often, a makeup artist will rent out space in a hotel, convention center, or business district, and host one-day or one-week makeup tutorials. These are a GREAT way to learn about makeup, AND meet other people who are interested in makeup. The best sites to learn about upcoming events are EventBrite.com, Yelp.com, and Meetup.com (although there are plenty of others). Look for events in Biloxi, Jackson, Gulfport, Hattiesburg, Tupelo, Columbus, and other city near you.
Private Sessions with Professional Makeup Artists. These are a great way to "make your education come to you." Instead of waiting for a workshop to come to your town, reach out to a makeup artist near you and request a private tutorial. Most makeup artists--especially ones that depend on an income from bridal events--are happy to schedule private lessons. Pro tip: if you have friends who are also involved in makeup, ask them to join.
Makeup Schools. If you're dead-set on going to a school that specializes in teaching fashion makeup, there is one option you have, and that's the travel! There are some excellent makeup schools in nearby states, and you can look to Louisiana, Florida, Texas, New York, and California for some excellent schools.
Which is the right option for you? For most people, going to a cosmetology school makes the most sense. You'll get a hands-on education and you'll be able to get a cosmetology license after graduate. If there are aspects of makeup that you feel you need to brush up on, you can supplement your training through workshops or private lessons. We've included a list of cosmetology schools in Mississippi below.

Getting A License: What You Need to Know
You may already know that if you want to be a cosmetologist or esthetician, you'll need to get a license. But what about if you want to become a professional makeup artist?
If you want to work in any kind of beauty salon or any kind of spa, you will need to get a cosmetology or esthetician license. To do that, you'll need to go to a cosmetology or esthetics school, graduate, and get a Mississippi license.
Many makeup artists who do freelance makeup and work on brides and models and actors and so on, do not have licenses. And, many artist who work at makeup counters do not have licenses (although some stores require them, but that's kind of rare).
For more information--and you should also seek more information when making career decisions!--you should contact the Mississippi State Board of Cosmetology. They are government agency in charge of licensing, so they would be the ultimate authority on all things beauty in Mississippi.
Mississippi Makeup Training
As we mentioned, there are no makeup schools in Mississippi at the current time. That may change, and when it does, we'll update our database.
Until then, remember that you can always attend a cosmetology program in order to start your makeup career. In fact, for many people, it's a great idea 🙂
